IHE Delft at 10th World Water Forum

10th World Water Forum

IHE Delft will participate in the 10th World Water Forum, to be held in Bali, Indonesia, from 18 to 25 May 2024 with the theme Water for Shared Prosperity. Institute delegates will speak at several sessions, and the Institute will be part of an UNESCO Water Pavilion.

The World Water Forum, held every three years since 1997, is the largest international gathering in the water sector. Hosted by the World Water Council and a host city, the event brings together participants from all levels and areas, including politics, multilateral institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector. Senior international and national officials, experts, scholars, entrepreneurs and economists from all over the world take part in the forum.

As a member of World Water Council Governors for the period 2023-2025, IHE Delft has taken part in conference preparations. Several Institute alumni from Indonesia are engaged in the National Organizing Committee.

  • Promoting the Values of the Subak System for Sustainable Water and Heritage Management

    SE37 Promoting the Values of the Subak System for Sustainable Water and Heritage Management (see SE37 List of side events - Google Drive)

    This side event brought together diverse stakeholders to discuss the socio-cultural and hydrological aspects of the Subak system. Participants examined challenges and opportunities for sustainable development, using the "value case methodology" at Subak Sembung Peguyangan and Subak Delod Sema Sading. The session summarizes these discussions and outlines commitments for future engagements. An IHE Delft representative will join this session on The concept of water heritage and its relevance to water management and heritage protection.

    By 2050, nearly 60% of the world will face severe water stress due to demographic growth, economic demand, watershed deterioration, and climate change. This session will explore fair water allocation and water rights, emphasizing collaborative efforts to balance economic growth, environmental sustainability, and equitable water distribution through legal, institutional, and technological measures.

    At the 2023 UN Water Conference, calls were made for inclusive water governance and effective stakeholder engagement. Public participation in water management improves decision quality, accountability, and transparency. The session will address trends and challenges in involving non-state actors, aiming to enhance public participation in water governance at all scales, with expected outcomes including key messages and top-level recommendations.

    SD-WISHEES* is hosting a workshop to create awareness about the link between extreme water events and the effects on our cultural heritage.

  • Protecting the rights of women, children and marginalized groups

    This session addresses water and sanitation challenges for women, children, and marginalized groups. Structured around 10 tables, each focusing on topics like disaster risk reduction, corruption, sextortion, weaponization of water, and disabilities. Discussions aim to generate practical solutions for advocacy and implementation, ensuring grassroots voices are included. Outcomes include actionable suggestions for protecting rights.

    The IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is hosting a session to advance financing for water projects, emphasizing commercial funding to achieve SDG 6. Participants will share experiences in securing private funding, aiming to establish a Centre of Practice for knowledge exchange. The session will address risk assessment challenges and foster collaborative efforts for sustainable financing.

    Onewater’s & IHE Delft World Water Forum Pub Quiz is an engaging, interactive event designed to facilitate networking, learning, and collaboration among water professionals, with a special emphasis on involving young professionals and students. Set in the vibrant locale of Bali, this event aims to replicate the success of a similar quiz held during World Water Week in Stockholm, which attracted over 300 participants and received outstanding feedback.

    Co-convened with IHE Delft, Asian Development Bank and Water Youth Network, and with support from Evodrop, with challenging questions, fabulous prizes, and opportunities to network with other WWF attendees.

    T6A2: Strengthening the capacities of institutions, professionals and stakeholders of water resources management and utilisation on Global Water Education Network (GWEN) by Eddy Moors

    The 2023 UN World Water Development Report stressed that, in order to achieve water-related SDGs, efforts must at least quadruple.This session will advocate that part of these additional efforts should focus on building the capacities of institutions managing water. It will present the interest to analyze the existing demand and offer in training and the benefits to develop training programs to improve the technical and managerial skills of professionals and stakeholders of water management. IHE Delft Rector Eddy Moors will speak on the Global Water Education Network (GWEN).
