World Water Forum: IHE Delft alumni sponsor mangrove tree planting to protect Bali coast

Mangrove plantation

A fund-raising campaign initiated by Indonesian alumni and IHE Delft ahead of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia, raised money to plant more than 1,200 mangrove trees to protect Bali’s coast from flood risks.

The mangrove trees were planted in Beloa Bay on Bali’s southern coast in collaboration with LindungiHutan, a local organization that works with mangrove farmers to protect coastal environments and farmers' livelihoods.

IHE Delft Rector Eddy Moors and other members of the Institute’s World Water Forum delegation  visited the planting site and listened to local farmers describing the challenges they face in light of climate change.

“This initiative honours the achievements of the global IHE Delft community, which works around the world to bring water progress to all. The mangrove plants will grow into a forest of trees that protect the coast, just like our alumni work to protect the planet’s water,” said IHE Delft Alumni Relations Advisor Maria Laura Sorrentino.

To learn more about mangroves and the wide range of ecosystem services they provide, be sure to add the September 2024 alumni online seminar to your agenda. Dr Sebrian Beselly, alumnus and staff member, will speak about their related research.
