Sebrian Beselly earns PhD for research that can help mangrove restoration succeed
On 12 July, Sebrian Beselly from Indonesia defended his PhD thesis on simulating mangrove forest growth and expansion. He presented a method to model mangrove forests’ trajectory and wetland development, which eventually can make mangrove restoration projects more likely to succeed. His promotor is Professor Dano Roelvink and his co-promotor Associate Professor Mick van der Wegen. Dr. Sebrian Beselly, who was awarded a doctoral degree for his research, shared a few insights as he embarks on a new chapter of his life.

Obituary: Jan Willem Foppen
Dr. Jan Willem Foppen, former IHE Delft Associate Professor of Hydrology, passed away on 24 June 2024. At the age of only 58, he left us far too early. Colleagues and students remember Jan Willem as a passionate researcher, a devoted teacher and a down-to-earth friend.

Young Water Diplomats Programme: Building a water-secure future
In a world where water security is becoming increasingly critical, the water diplomacy skills gained by the 18 participants in the recently concluded IHE Delft Young Water Diplomats programme are key. Hailing from 13 different countries stretching from Finland to Zimbabwe and from Canada to Kazakhstan, the diplomats spent the past six months combining in-depth study and practical experience.

Silvia Bentancur Caballero earns PhD for research on phosphorus removal efficiency
On 24 June, Silvia Bentancur Caballero from Uruguay defended her PhD thesis on the evaluation of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of the UPM pulp industry in her country to improve phosphorus (P) removal efficiency. She has been awarded a doctoral degree for her research. Her promotors are Professor Damir Brdjanovic and Prof. Hector Garcia Hernandez and her copromotor Dr. Carlos Lopez Vazquez.

IHE Delft project creates web application to assess nature-based solutions for climate adaptation
Choosing the right nature-based solutions for climate adaptation is tricky. Will measures such as blocking ditches, restoring wetlands or creating infiltration ponds give the best results? Or is tree planting or heathland restoration better? Or other measures, or a combination? A new application, developed by IHE Delft, in collaboration with Open University and the Province of Noord Brabant, helps decision-makers in the Dutch-Belgian Aa or Weerijs river catchment evaluate solutions.

Kees Nederhoff earns PhD for research on new methods to compute tropical cyclone induced flooding
On 20 June, Kees Nederhoff from the Netherlands successfully defended his PhD thesis on new approaches to tropical cyclone risk analyses and their implications for coastal flooding predictions and has been awarded a doctoral degree. His promotor is Professor Dano Roelvink and his copromotors are Dr. Ap van Dongeren and Dr. José Antolínez.
