Tuition Fee

The tuition fee charged by IHE Delft for the Research MSc Programme in Water and Sustainable Development is €34,800 (1,2) for the full (120 EC) programme.

The fee includes the use of a laptop (3) for each MSc student and internet access in all rooms in IHE Delft rented accommodation in Delft. Also included are the handling fee, costs of fieldtrips, the introductory programme and study materials. The costs of the residence permit and insurance are not included in the tuition fee and are at this moment:

  • Health insurance: €1,254 
  • Residence permit: €228 one-off fee

Participants are expected to cover their own living expenses. The estimated amount needed for subsistence and accommodation is approximately €1220 per month.

Participants who are accompanied by their families should have additional financial resources. On top of the expenses already mentioned, other items have to be considered, such as ticket costs, fee for collection of entry visa and, if you intend to do research in a country outside the Netherlands, tickets and research costs etc.

    *Value Added Tax (VAT)

    As of June 16, 2018, the legal status of IHE Delft has changed. From this date, IHE Delft is a not for profit foundation covered by tax requirements in the Netherlands and IHE Delft has to charge (and pay) Value Added Tax (VAT). 

    The VAT percentage charged by IHE Delft depends on variables. VAT will be charged by IHE Delft depending on to whom the invoice will be sent, where the activities will take place and where the beneficiary resides.

    The most common cases are stated below.

    When the invoice is sent to:

    1. Natural person (private person)

    • The invoice is sent to a Dutch natural person, for an activity in or outside the Netherlands: VAT rate of 21% will be charged on the invoice,
    • The invoice is sent to a natural person resided within a European Union (EU) member country, for an activity in NL- or outside EU: VAT rate of 21% will be charged on the invoice,
    • The invoice is sent to a natural person from outside the EU: 21% VAT

    2. Legal entity (private (i.e., business entity or non-governmental organization) or public (i.e., government) organization)

    • The invoice is sent to a Dutch legal entity: a VAT rate of 21% will be charged on the invoice.
    • The invoice is sent to a legal entity within a European Union (EU) member country with a valid VAT number: 0% VAT will be charged on the invoice, mentioning VAT reverse charge.
    • The invoice is sent to a legal entity within a European Union (EU) member country without a (valid) VAT number: A VAT rate of 21% will be charged on the invoice. No VAT will be charged if the legal entity is an International Organisation and can prove it is tax exempt in the country of residence.
    • The invoice is sent to legal entity outside the EU: no VAT will be charged, this is outside the scope of Dutch VAT.

  • IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme

    For female applicants

    The fourth application cycle of the IAEA’s Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP) is now open. Women interested in studying nuclear related subjects (including Isotopic Techniques, applied to Human Health, Food and Agriculture, Biotechnology and Biophotonics, Water Resources, Environmental Engineering and Bioengineering) are encouraged to apply.

    Based on your CV and your motivation, you may be given special early access to apply for admission for the Research MSc Programme in Water and Sustainable Development starting in October 2024.

  • IHE Delft Partial Scholarships

    For self-paying students - 10% Early Bird discount can be combined

    Hardship Scholarship

    Offers a 25% reduction of the tuition fee to self-paying, academically admitted applicants who do not have sufficient financial means to cover their study costs. Applications are handled on ‘first come, first served’, ongoing basis.  Applicants for this scholarship have to confirm and prove that they do have sufficient means to cover the remaining cost for fees and living expenses. After this has been confirmed, they receive an invoice for payment of the reduced tuition fee plus insurance and residence permit costs.

    Top Water Scientist Scholarship

    Offers a 40% reduction of the tuition fee to self-paying, academically admitted applicants with excellent (academic) background (1) who do not have sufficient financial means to cover their study costs. Applications are handled on ‘first come, first served’, ongoing basis. Applicants for this scholarship have to confirm and prove that they do have sufficient means to cover the remaining cost for fees and living expenses. After this has been confirmed, they receive an invoice for payment of the reduced tuition fee plus insurance and residence permit costs.

    (1) Selection criteria: a combination of the following criteria may apply: excellent academic background (high BSc/MSc GPA, relevant BSc/MSc major for the chosen track/profile), relevant research or work experience, strong motivation, research topic, good recommendations.

    Early Bird discount for self-paying students

    Offers a 10% discount on the tuition fee to self-paying applicants whose first year payment (2) was received before 1 June 2024.

    (2) IHE Delft requires one-year payment with financial confirmation for the second year.

    General criteria for Other general criteria for IHE Delft Partial Scholarships for self-paying students

    • Scholarships will be awarded on rolling basis until our scholarship budget is finished. (We expect to be able to award 30 partial scholarships in total for both the regular and research MSc Programme in Water and Sustainable Development.)
    • The 10% Early Bird discount can be combined with an IHE Delft Partial Scholarship for self-paying students. In these cases, the discount of 10% applies on the already reduced tuition fee of the awarded IHE scholarship.
    • If an applicant is awarded an IHE Delft scholarship or given the Early Bird discount and this applicant later on is awarded another scholarship (e.g. OKP, Rotary), the already paid tuition fee will be paid back to the applicant and the IHE scholarship will be withdrawn.
    • The Hardship Scholarship cannot be combined with the Top Water Scientist Scholarship.

    Water and Development Partnership Programme

    The IHE Delft Water and Development Partnership Programme, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is providing a limited number of scholarships in the framework of capacity strengthening and nurturing a network of water professionals in the focus regions and countries of the programme.

    There are full and partial scholarships available. The full scholarships include the total cost of the MSc Programme in Water and Sustainable Development: Tuition fee, insurance, international travel cost and an allowance for the cost of living and accommodation during the complete study period.

  • NAF Study Loan Program

    For applicants from the USA

    The Netherland-America Foundation (NAF) provides interest-free loans to eligible Dutch or American students and professionals enrolling in advanced studies coursework or research at an accredited institution of higher learning. It is meant for Dutch students studying in the United States or American students studying in the Netherlands. The NAF Education Committee reviews Study Loan proposals each May. All loan applications must be completed in English.

  • National Fellowships in Latin America

    For applicants from Latin America

    As IHE Delft is a UNESCO affiliated Institute and not a regular university, it may not appear in their website listings of eligible institutions. It is worth applying for funding once you have been academically accepted by IHE Delft, as these organisations will most likely consider your fellowship application. The name UNESCO-IHE (former name of IHE Delft) may appear in some application systems.

    Your country might also offer individual fellowships for studies abroad, contact your national Ministry of Education or a similar organisation/agency for more information.

  • OPEC Fund Scholarship Award

    The OPEC Fund Scholarship Award sponsors outstanding young students from developing countries through graduate studies in a development-related discipline. The OPEC Fund awards its scholarships to qualified applicants who have obtained or are on the verge of completing their undergraduate degree and who wish to study for a Master’s degree. Applicants must be from a developing country, and he/she must first obtain admission to pursue a Master’s degree studies in a relevant field of development, from any recognized university/college in the world.

  • Qalaa Holdings Scholarship Foundation

    For applicants with the Egyptian nationality

    The Qalaa Holdings Scholarship Foundation was created in 2007, out of a strong will to contribute to national development through creating high caliber professionals to help enhance Egypt’s growth in all sectors. The Foundation is funded by an endowment from Qalaa Holdings to grant academic scholarships for talented and promising young Egyptian men and women to pursue master degrees abroad, such as the MSc in Water and Sustainable Development.

  • WFF Russell E. Train Education for Nature (EFN)

    Through EFN, WWF is building the next generation of conservation leaders who are committed to addressing these challenges and protecting the world’s most biologically diverse places. With funding from WWF, conservationists can pursue graduate studies, attend short-term training courses, and build institutional capacity to train local communities.

    To date, the program has supported 3,000 individuals and 600 institutions across 60 countries. These individuals and organizations play a key role in not only protecting species and habitats, but also leading research, communicating science, changing policy, and mentoring the next generation of conservationists in their countries.

  • WMO Fellowships

    WMO is partnering with IHE Delft to jointly support one or two scholarships a year from developing and least developed countries to undertake the MSc programme in Water and Sustainable Development and the Research MSc in Water and Sustainable Development.

    To be considered for a fellowship for the academic year 2024-2025/26 under WMO/IHE Delft joint funding applicants must:

    • have unconditional admission to the IHE Delft MSc programme in Water and Sustainable Development or the Research MSc in Water and Sustainable Development.
    • complete and submit a WMO Fellowship Nomination Form to WMO. The FNF must be submitted through, and approved by, the Permanent Representative (PR) of your country with WMO. You will find the contact of your country’s Permanent Representative in the WMO community website: community.wmo.int/members .
    • WMO can only consider your request for scholarship if your application is formally presented through the officially designated Permanent Representative of your Government with the Organization. This is usually the Director of National Meteorological and Hydrometeorological Service(s). Please note that the PR may give preference to personnel from the National Meteorological Service or National Hydrological Service of their country.

    For WMO to consider the scholarship nomination all of the above conditions must be met. Successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified through the PR of their country by the end of July 2024. For further information email: fel@wmo.int

Discount for water sector organizations

Private or public water sector organizations that send batches of (equal or larger than 3) of their employees are eligible for a reduction of the tuition fee of 25% per student.
