Sergio Salinas Rodríguez

Head of the WSSEE Department

Sergio Salinas Rodriguez

Dr. Sergio Salinas is a desalination and water treatment technology professional and university lecturer with experience in Latin America, Middle East, and Europe.

Sergio has a PhD in Desalination and Water Treatment from the Technical University of Delft (Netherlands), an MSc in Water Supply Engineering from UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (Netherlands), a Master's in Irrigation and Drainage and a BSc in Civil Engineering from San Simon Major University (Bolivia). He also obtained the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ), a qualification of pedagogical competences of university teachers in the Netherlands.

He has over 75 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, books and book chapters in top publishing houses, and conference proceedings in the areas of seawater and brackish water desalination, water treatment, water reuse, and natural organic matter characterization. He is a member of the SENSE Research School.

Sergio is involved in teaching and curriculum development of the MSc Programme in Urban Water and Sanitation (UWS) at IHE Delft. Furthermore he has worked in capacity building and in research and innovation projects (e.g., EU-MEDINA, EU-MIDES, EU-MAR2PROTECT), and has been project leader in several of them. He has mentored more than 45 MSc students, co-promoted 4 PhD students, and currently supervises 2 PhD students.

Sergio serves as review editor of the journal Frontiers in Separation Processes and is member of the Topics board and Reviewers board of the journal Membranes. Sergio is also a representative member of ALADYR. Sergio is in charge of the desalination and membrane technology research line at IHE Delft (www.desalination-delft.nl).

Research Summary

  • Membrane technology (microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis): control of particulate / colloidal fouling, fouling of RO due to cationic polymers, calcium carbonate scaling in brackish water RO and seawater RO, removal of micropollutants, pre-treatment for seawater RO systems, hydrodynamic conditions
  • Desalination of seawater and brackish water
  • Water reuse: reuse of domestic wastewater treated effluent into ultrapure water
  • Biological stability of drinking water
  • Smart dosing control: coagulants and antiscalants
  • Natural organic matter characterization
  • Development of early warning tools/indicators to assess fouling in RO systems (e.g., MFI-UF, ATP, AOC, growth potential)
