Mostafa Ahmed

Mostafa Ahmed is a researcher in the field of waste management, resource recovery and bio-based circular economy. He belongs to the Pollution Prevention and Resource Recovery research group, within the Water Supply, Sanitation, and Environmental Engineering Department, and joined IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in October 2022.

Mostafa holds a PhD degree (2021) and an MSc degree (2013), both in Environmental Engineering, from Ain Shams University, Egypt, as well as an MSc degree (2015) in Environmental Studies of Cities and Sustainability from Aalborg University, Denmark. In his PhD studies, Mostafa researched the coupling of hydrothermal processes with anaerobic digestion for improving sludge management at the University of Trento, Italy, where he was a visiting PhD student from 2019 to 2021. He was also a visiting scholar at the University of California – Davis, USA, in 2015. Besides his studies and research experience, Mostafa has taught water and wastewater treatment, solid waste management and green economy courses at several Egyptian universities. In addition to his academic background, he has professional experience in consultancies within the fields of waste management, planning and policies, as well as ensuring ecological sustainability compliance within supply chains, with local and international organizations. Furthermore, he has ample experience in delivering international training on waste and chemicals management to industries.

Mostafa’s core career motivator is to support communities to grow economically and socially in an environmentally sound manner. In IHE Delft, he is working on the Bio4Afrcia project, and his research focuses on waste valorization through hydrothermal and anaerobic digestion technologies within the African context to recover energy and resources that meet societal and industrial demands.
