Konstantina Katsanou
Senior Lecturer/Researcher in Water Quality Assessment and Monitoring
Konstantina Katsanou, currently Senior Lecturer/Researcher in Water Quality Assessment and Monitoring at IHE Delft, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geology and a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences. Konstantina received her Ph.D. from the University of Patras, Greece where she also carried out her postdoctoral research.
Both her Ph.D. and postdoctoral research focused on karst hydrogeology and hydrochemistry. She deployed hydrological, hydrogeological and meteorological data, as well as major, trace and rare earth element and stable isotope data to determine the development of karst and karstification grade of carbonate rocks but also to assess the vulnerability of karst aquifers.
The focus of her career to date has been in hydrogeology research, water resource conservation, and water quality monitoring. She has long fieldwork and laboratory experience. Among her scientific interests is the use of chemical parameters, i.e. stable isotopes, major, trace and rare earth elements as a tool for the investigation of origin and circulation of groundwater.
She has extensive experience in Water Policy at European level. She worked for the Greek Water Directorate on the implementation of the European environmental regulations, while she contributed to the revision and implementation of the River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs) and Flood Risk Management Plans (FRMPs).
Konstantina is teaching parts of the MSc Programme on surface and groundwater quality monitoring, and is involved in the supervision of MSc students. She is also involved in a number of interdisciplinary research and capacity-building projects in Europe, North and Central America, and East Africa.
