Dr. Angeles Mendoza Sammet is Lecturer and Researcher in Environmental Planning and Management within the Water Management chair group, Department of Integrated Water Systems and Governance. Her focus is Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment. She is an interdisciplinary socio-environmental scientist and practitioner.
She worked as impact assessment consultant in Canada and has acted as land use planning facilitator in Mexico. In Impact assessment, she is interested in improving the integration of indigenous people in decision-making for natural resource management and also in improving management of protected areas. Her research topics include corporate social responsibility, natural resource development & community conflict, multi-level governance, stakeholder analysis, environmental management systems, ecosystem-based management, and evaluation of management effectiveness. Angeles worked as assistant researcher at the Laboratory of Ecology and Conservation of Wildlife or the Institute of Ecology, National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) for ten years. For five of those years, she was also lecturer at UNAM’s Department of Geography teaching Hydrology and Conservation of Natural She established the National Coordination of Ecology-Mountain Protection at the Mexican Federation of Mountain Sports and led it for five years.
Angeles volunteers as mediator and environmental advisor for communities in Canada and Mexico.

Studies
Angeles holds certificates in conflict management (mediation, negotiation) and in consensus decision-making. Her studies at UNAM include a BSc. in Biology (Honors), with a practicum in soil sciences and ecology of agricultural systems, and a MSc. in Ecology and Environmental Sciences with focus on ecology of tropical small mammals. In 2011, she got her Ph.D. degree on Environmental Design, specialty in environmental Management, from the University of Calgary, Canada. She is trained in environmental and social risk analysis, decision-support systems and multi-criteria analysis.

She has a designation as Professional Biologist (Alberta Society of Professional Biologist) and is a member of IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas and the International Association for Impact Assessment.
