Ali Dastgheib

Dr. Ali Dastgheib is an Associate Professor of Coastal Engineering and Port Development at the Department of Coastal & Urban Risk & Resilience, IHE Delft. He is also the Chief Research & Innovation Officer at IMDC (International Marine and Dredging Consultants)-TRACTEBEL BAIE.

Ali obtained his BSc in Civil Engineering from Shiraz University, Iran, in 1999, and his MSc in Hydraulic Structures (Gold Medalist) from Amir Kabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic), Iran, in 2001. He received another MSc in Coastal Engineering and Port Development (with distinction) from IHE Delft, after conducting his graduation research at Deltares (formerly WL | Delft Hydraulics). In November 2012, he was awarded a PhD in Coastal Engineering from Delft University of Technology and IHE Delft.

Since October 2007, he has been working at IHE Delft, carrying out research, advisory, and capacity development projects in tidal basins and estuaries, coastal morphology, climate change adaptation, coastal hazards, coastal risk, coastal zone management, port planning, and port traffic simulation.

Throughout these years, he has been active in converting state-of-the-art applied research into practical solutions by engaging with local communities and local and international firms. Leveraging his expertise in coastal structure design and a deep understanding of coastal engineering processes, hazards, risk management, and climate change adaptation, he contributes significantly to the advancement of coastal development practices and climate resilience strategies in various coastal landscapes. He has worked in many different countries, including The Netherlands, Australia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Thailand, India, China, Sweden, Iran, Peru, Indonesia, Liberia, Sao Tome, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin, Bangladesh, The Bahamas, Mozambique, Japan, Oman, Curacao, Cuba, and Belgium.

Ali has guided more than 50 MSc students and 6 PhD candidates. From September 2014 until the end of 2019, he served as the Deputy Head (Manager) of the Water Science and Engineering Department at IHE Delft.
