Selam Sahlu

Selam Belay Sahlu

Selam Belay Sahlu was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She has been teaching at the rank of a lecturer at Civil and Environmental Engineering department, Addis Ababa Institute of Technology, Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. Currently, she is a PhD student at IHE Delft and her research focused on the development of integrated modelling of optimal water allocations under a changing environment (taking in to account climate change & urbanization) for a better water resource management in the Nile River Basin. Selam also did her M.Sc. degree in Water Science and Engineering, specialized in Hydroinformatics at IHE Delft. Before she came to Netherlands to do her M.Sc. at the IHE Delft, she was an Assistant lecturer at the Water Technology Institute, Arbaminch University.

Selam has more than 10 years of teaching, research and industrial working experiences at university, consultancy and international organizations in the area of water. She has been participated in numbers of local and international trainings, capacity building programs and experience sharing events on modelling tools and decision support systems in the areas of water and Agriculture. Main areas of involvement as a lecturer at the university includes teaching hydraulics and numerical analysis courses for Civil Engineering undergraduate students, Supervising and mentoring several undergraduate and Master of Engineering students on diverse water related topics with software and modelling tools. She was also a course coordinator of hydraulics courses and focal person of NB-DSS (Nile basin decision Support system) of the Nile Basin Initiative for Addis Ababa university. She was also involved in number of national researches in the area of water management and flood forecasts. Selam successfully completed a Diploma certificate of competency teaching qualification for teaching at higher education institutions from Addis Ababa University. 

She has been also working at the Eastern Nile Technical Regional Office (ENTRO) of the Nile Basin Initiative as a young profession on water resource modelling under Eastern Nile Multi Sectorial Investment Opportunity Analysis and NCORE (Nile Cooperation for Results) Project. She was also supporting the water resource planning unit and international consultants on water resource modelling. She also worked at the International Fund for Agricultural Development of the United Nations (IFAD) under the project “Filling the inter-generational gap in knowledge on Agricultural Water Management: twinning junior and senior experts”.

Selam besides the aforementioned activities and works, she has been involved in various community outreach program. She has been conducting training to enhance awareness about conservation, teach know-hows on home-based water management and gardening. She has also been volunteering within the city of Addis Ababa to promote and support women education.
