IHE Delft alumnus Tom Okurut Okia passes away
Okurut studied at IHE Delft from 1991 to 1999. His MSc and PhD degrees in Environmental Science and Technology focused on the adoption of the Framework Strategy for the Management and Development of Lake Victoria Basin by East African Community Council of Ministers as a planning tool by all Lake Victoria Stakeholders.
He was Executive Director Climate Change Action East Africa and former executive director of the National Environment Management Authority (NENA). He received the IHE Delft Alumni Award in 2014 (then UNESCO-IHE) for his outstanding contributions to water management and was an active and engaged alumnus.
He was also the husband of Dr Ademun Anna Rose Okurut, the Commissioner of Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries and father of IHE Delft alumna Morena Edith Akurut (Sanitary Engineer 2022), Odongo Keefa Okurut and Otim Amaziah Martin.
Career in water management
Okurut pursued a long and distinguished career in water management, he leaves an unspoken legacy of bringing out the best from scientists across institutions. He initiated a number of activities that positively impacted lives in his local community and beyond.
