Graham Jewitt joined IHE Delft Institute for Water Education as Professor of Hydrology in 2019 and was appointed Vice Rector in 2024. Prior to joining IHE Delft, he was Director of the Centre for Water Resources Research and Umgeni Water Chair of Water Resources Research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
Over the past 20 years, Graham has led several water- and earth-system science related research and capacity development initiatives, both in South Africa and abroad. Since joining IHE Delft, he has focused mostly on building and strengthening individual and institutional capacity to better support water resource management and planning decisions.
Graham is on the editorial board of several journals: Journal of Hydrology Regional Studies, Global Environmental Change, Hydrology and Earth System Sciences and WaterSA. He is active in several national and international fora, and from 2014 to 2018, he was an elected member of the governing board of Waternet, a regional network of university departments and research and training institutes that works to develop capacity for water resources management in southern Africa.
His recent research has focused on the effective use of science to better inform land and water resources policy development, and developing tools to support the effective implementation of such policies. His current research focuses on the nexus connecting water, food and energy, as well as how to avoid maladaptation to climate change. He has authored or co-authored over 120 journal articles and supervised numerous PhD and MSc students from different parts of the world.
