Alumni Online Seminar: Paradigm lost
Paradigm lost - on the value of lost causes in transforming cities and water systems’ development pathways by Jonatan Godinez Madrigal.
About the seminar
Water conflicts have a negative connotation throughout the world. They are associated with catastrophic narratives such as future water wars and destructive droughts that produce famines. However, conflicts over water occur daily at different spatial and temporal scales and intensities. Neighbours compete during water rationing practices to be the first to collect water from the pipe and water tankers. Cities compete with productive sectors such as agriculture to secure water concessions to quench the growing urban thirst for water. However, from an inter- and transdisciplinary perspective, water conflicts can be understood as symptoms of unsustainable and inequitable water systems. Therefore, water conflicts also represent opportunities to transform and redesign water management systems through historical, longitudinal, and interdisciplinary analyses that make it possible to identify vicious cycles that never end in solving problems, and encourage virtuous cycles of transdisciplinary collaboration for sustainability transitions.
