Prajakta Santosh Gaware: engineering innovative water solutions for a brighter future

Prajakta in Delft

Prajakta Santosh Gaware from India came to IHE Delft to further develop her academic knowledge on water management and climate change engineering. With an interest for water that traces back to a young age, she is now pursuing the MSc in Water and Sustainable Development, specializing in Water Hazards and Climate Change (Engineering Science).

Studying at IHE Delft

My experience at IHE Delft has been incredibly enriching and stimulating. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by the Institute’s dynamic academic environment. The student body is very diverse, and the wide range of cultures and backgrounds makes the learning experience inclusive and collaborative.

One of the standout aspects of my time here has been the expertise of the faculty. Learning from world-renowned experts in water management, sustainability and climate change has been truly inspiring. This access to leading professionals is one of the key reasons why I chose to study here.

IHE Delft’s approach greatly differs from traditional university education. Instead of prioritising lectures and exams, IHE Delft focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration, real-world simulations, and project-based learning. The teaching method at IHE Delft is a balanced combination of theoretical instruction and practical problem-solving. Indeed, this equips the students with the skills needed to make a real difference in the water sector.

A lifelong commitment to water management and sustainability

My interest in the water sector began at a young age, shaped by both personal experiences and academic curiosity. Growing up in India, one of my earliest memories is helping my grandmother collect water from the community tap during the hot summer months. This experience instilled in me a deep awareness of water scarcity and the urgent need for sustainable water management.

As I progressed in my academic career, I came to recognize the critical importance of effective water management strategies. My background in civil engineering, combined with global professional experience, has provided me with valuable insights into water management and strengthened my commitment to ensuring sustainable water resources for future generations.

With this passion in mind, IHE Delft stood out when I began searching for an MSc programme. The Institute’s global reputation for excellence in water management and sustainability, its interdisciplinary approach and its balance between practical and academic learning made it the ideal place to deepen my expertise in water hazards, climate change and engineering solutions.

Water situation in India

India faces a severe water crisis, with challenges ranging from water scarcity and unsafe drinking water to poor sanitation, leading to serious health risks and high child mortality rates. The country also experiences intense flooding, driven by erratic monsoons, poor urban planning, and infrastructure failures. Climate change also plays a role, as it is worsening water stress and causing unpredictable rainfall. (Reference: SIWI - Water Crisis in India)

These issues are what urged me to undertake a path in water-related engineering. The continuous seeking for innovative solutions and sustainable water management practices is the main motive behind my studies at IHE Delft.

After graduation

After graduation, I plan to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve gained at IHE Delft to water hazard management and climate change engineering, with a focus on developing sustainable solutions for water scarcity and flooding. I aim to contribute to the creation of innovative infrastructure projects, policies and technologies that address these challenges on a global scale.

My time at IHE Delft, along with my background and professional achievements, sparked an interest in working in settings where water-related issues are critical. By collaborating with international organizations, governmental bodies and NGOs, I aim to implement water management systems that mitigate the impacts of climate change, improve water access and promote sustainability in vulnerable communities.
