Online Course on Urban Drainage and Sewerage
This course aims at providing an explanation of the elements and processes involved in the urban drainage systems and a recommendation of appropriate application.
For whom?
This course is designed for professionals interested in achieving and maintaining the environment and public health. Typical students include civil, process and sanitary engineers, university faculty and researchers, and technical managers.
Prerequisites
Required knowledge in hydraulics (Basic hydraulic principles related to Pipe flow, partial flow conditions and free surface flow – channel flow)
Required knowledge in hydrology (main hydrological processes in urban areas, IDF curves, time of concentration, design rainfall, climate change and urbanization impacts, rainfall-runoff methods to estimate peak flows)
Learning objectives
- Discuss the current challenges in urban drainage and sewerage systems posed by urbanization and climate change towards sustainable and resilience cities.
- Describe the hydrological processes relevant to urban stormwater and the impacts of urbanization on hydrological processes and the generation of urban runoff
- Describe different types of sewer systems, their advantages and disadvantages as well as their criteria for design, construction, and operation and maintenance and applicability
- Critically assess and analyze quantity and quality characteristics of stormwater and wastewater originating from urban environments as a basis for the design, operation and maintenances of urban drainage and sewerage system facilities.
- Analyse model results of a urban drainage system developed with a hydrodynamic tool (i.e. SWMM) for decision making purposes ( i.e. design, renewal and upgrading of urban drainage systems).
- Develop basic drainage and sewerage system designs.
- Determine the type of data required (i.e analyses of spatial and temporal data, design standards and regulations, public health, etc) for the design, simulation and operation and management of urban drainage and sewerage systems
