Online Course on Disinfection, Adsorption and Natural Processes for Water Treatment

This course will encompass drinking water quality guidelines and regulations, the effect of water collection and storage on self-purification, algae in water treatment, disinfection processes, including natural treatment systems, and finally, adsorption and activated carbon.

For whom?

Professionals dealing with engineering, management and education in the fields of water supply, wastewater and urban infrastructure. It is also helpful for postgraduate students in environmental engineering. Participants from government organisations (such as local administrations and national agencies), non-governmental organisations and the private sector are encouraged to join.

Prerequisites

Preparatory course on chemistry. Available at IHE OperCourseWare platform https://ocw.un-ihe.org/

Learning objectives

  1. Prepare conceptual design of appropriate processes depending on the nature of impurities to be removed and the intended use of the treated water.
  2. Integrate theoretical principles of disinfection with practical aspects of evaluation of disinfection systems;
  3. Explain the principles of disinfection, drinking water quality, natural treatment systems, adsorption and activated carbon filtration processes;

Course content

The objective of the course is to provide participants with basic knowledge on specific aspects of selected treatment processes applied in surface water treatment. The course will encompass drinking water quality guidelines and regulations, the effect of water collection and storage on self-purification, algae in water treatment, disinfection processes, including natural treatment systems, and finally, adsorption and activated carbon. After completion of the online course, the students will be able to explain theoretical principles, integrate practice and theory and prepare conceptual designs of the aforementioned processes.

The course is sub-divided into the following 6 topics:

  • Drinking water quality
  • Water collection and storage
  • Disinfection
  • Natural treatment systems
  • Adsorption
  • Activated carbon
