Online Course on Behaviour Change and Advocacy
This course highlights the significance of behaviour change across the sanitation value chain. You are exposed to behaviour theory and advocacy methods from prominent sanitation professionals who have designed and implemented impactful interventions in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
For whom?
- Young and mid-career water, sanitation or public health professionals working in private companies, local authorities or NGOs.
- Practitioners, decision-makers and other professionals (not strictly working already in the field) who have the interest to expand their knowledge in sanitation, behaviour change and advocacy.
Prerequisites
This module is suitable for learners with any background. They should preferably have previous knowledge and/or experience in sanitation, WASH, faecal sludge management or a similar field.
Learning objectives
- 1 Explain behaviour change and advocacy concepts and models in the practice and delivery of safely-managed non-sewered sanitation in urban environments
- 2 Apply knowledge from interdisciplinary social science case examples to practically effect sanitation behaviour change and advocacy
- 3 Develop non-sewered sanitation behaviour change and advocacy intervention strategies for a diverse range of populations and contexts
Course content
This is an intensive 11-week online teaching course, with an average study load of 8 hours per week. The course is divided into 5 units. Each unit has an average duration between 1 to 4 weeks and it is assessed via different assignments usually delivered by the end of the unit.
The 5 main units are:
- Behaviour & advocacy definitions, concepts, and determinants
- Transitions towards sustainable sanitation through behaviour change approaches
- Sanitation behaviour & advocacy strategies
- Behaviour change models
- Sanitation behaviour change design workshops
This online course highlights the significance of behaviour change across the sanitation value chain. Participants are exposed to behaviour theories and advocacy methods from prominent sanitation professionals who have designed and implemented impactful interventions in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to understand the concepts of behavioural change, and demonstrate an awareness of approaches promoting change in a diverse range of populations and contexts.

Silvia Bentancur Caballero earns PhD for research on phosphorus removal efficiency
On 24 June, Silvia Bentancur Caballero from Uruguay defended her PhD thesis on the evaluation of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of the UPM pulp industry in her country to improve phosphorus (P) removal efficiency. She has been awarded a doctoral degree for her research. Her promotors are Professor Damir Brdjanovic and Prof. Hector Garcia Hernandez and her copromotor Dr. Carlos Lopez Vazquez.
